Biografie | Donal Sarsfield primarily records, transforms and organises sounds. In his recent work he is interested in stimulating a perceptual link between the listener, the work and the world in which we live. In 2014, he completed his PhD research, which was focused on a series of pieces for organized sound focusing on one particular sound source. This culminated in The Doors Piece, a half hour work created mostly from the recorded sounds of doors. Since 2017 he has begun to compose pieces which he can sing and perform himself - The Ma Piece (a duet with Bea Arthur) and Glorify the Brick. He was commissioned by Distractfold Ensemble funded by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation as part of their lockdown project The New Unusual. He was selected to be part of the LSO Soundhub Phase I Scheme. Sarsfield was the winner of Seán Ó Riada Composition Competition at the Cork Choral Festival in 2018. In 2014 he was commissioned by Balleto di Roma to create an original ballet score during a week long residency at the Clore Studio, Royal Opera House London. He attended Jerwood DanceEast Lab in Ipswich 2012 and the Jerwood Opera Writing Foundation Course at Aldeburgh 2010. |
