“When Silence Rises from Earth” is filmed by Ugandan cinematographer Joshua Black-Alibet.

It documents a ceremony that was performed at the end of 2020 by IR::Sankara Future Dub Resurgence.

The ceremony takes place at the Dub Museum in Kampala, Uganda. It centers around the ritual preparation of a djembe drum, but its focus is on the future – our anti-colonial futures.

The theme of silence is key to the film’s soundtrack and is partly inspired by John Cage’s 4’33”.

The film is equally engaged with a visual installation in the Dub Museum, a set of poster collages highlighting stories of resistance, messages of healing, and symbols of connection along outernationalist lines.
